WHAT IS ADAS?

Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are technologically advanced features consisting of computer connected sensors and cameras designed to prevent or reduce collisions, by alerting the driver.

WHY IS ADAS CALIBRATION IMPORTANT?

ADAS systems rely on cameras and sensors in your car responsible for the proper operation of one or more of its features in your vehicle such as adaptive cruise control, anti-lock braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, among others.

TYPES OF ADAS CALIBRATIONS

STATIC CALIBRATION

Consists of setting up a vehicle-specific target board a precise distance from the vehicle and finding the center of the vehicle. The camera is then recalibrated via the scan tool connected to the vehicle’s computer and the target board aligns the vehicle.

DYNAMIC CALIBRATION

Consists of hooking up a scan tool to the vehicle and going for a road test. The road test will then align the vehicle while the scan tool calibrates the camera

How important is it to properly calibrate ADAS in a vehicle?

According to vehicle manufacturers, if your vehicle is equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) feature, calibration is necessary for all of these instances:

  • Following windshield replacement
  • Following collision repair
  • Your airbag has deployed
  • Following suspension repair
  • Following a front end alignment
  • Following a change in tires or ride height
  • Following replacement of a faulty camera
  • Any of your ADAS lights are on/flashing codes
  • Following replacement of the vehicle’s ECM (Engine Control Module), PCM (Powertrain Control Module), or ECU (Engine Control Unit)

What if the dealership that I purchased my car from tells me that ADAS calibration following a windshield replacement is not necessary for my car?

Because ADAS is a relatively new technology, there are still a great many automotive dealerships that are unaware of the manufacturer’s recommendations and/or do not perform ADAS calibrations.
